I have been replacing my own Djembe's skin for many years because it's the most economical way and I love those process to take as well! I am a little bit artisan type of person who wants to know all the process so that I can take good control over my instruments. Anyways, I have recently replaced two Djembes' skin in a row for my friends. Then I'm putting a new skin on my own second Djembe soonish as well. It's NOT an easy thing to do and requires lots of experiences. I've failed properly replacing it several times in my life. Either of the top ring or the bottom ring can easily end up with being super tilt. You can break the skin if you tighten it too much when the skin is still wet. You need to monitor the angle of both rings as you tighten the rope little by little very closely to make a perfect balance. This process also requires strength to pull the rope very hard in order to tighten the skin and lots of time and patience. You need to know how much more you can tighten the skin, or break it and start over.
Here are some Vids and photos of the steps I took to replace the skin and tune it from the last time. You can see how it's done.
